Vandals target the headquarters of League 42 in Wichita again, escalating a troubling pattern of attacks. This series of incidents includes defacement of a Jackie Robinson tribute, which has left the league's executive director, Bob Lutz, concerned for the future.
Recent weeks have seen graffiti on bleachers, a mural, and a stone honoring league donors. Notably, the name "Jackie" was crossed out on the donor stone inscribed with "Friends of Jackie." Lutz discovered books from an outdoor library, designed to promote literacy among players, scattered on the ground. "We were able to pick up trash and clean up graffiti," he stated, but the frequency of these incidents raises alarm.
The league previously suffered a significant loss when a Jackie Robinson statue was stolen in January 2024, leading to a 15-year prison sentence for the perpetrator. Incidents have occurred at McAdams Park, where yellow paint was splashed on a bollard protecting the replacement statue. As Jackie Robinson Day approaches on April 15, Lutz reflects on the league's growth, now boasting 630 players and various educational programs. League 42 continues to push forward, supported by a $100,000 grant from MLB for statue replacement and security enhancements.
