The significance of this award lies in its emphasis on late-game performance. Gilgeous-Alexander expressed, "To get this award, you have to help your team win games late, and what I'm about, more than anything, is winning games." He outperformed tough competition from Minnesota's Anthony Edwards and Denver's Jamal Murray to claim the honor.

Gilgeous-Alexander led the league with 175 clutch points and ranked ninth with 21 assists in critical moments, contributing to the Oklahoma City Thunder's impressive 20-7 record in clutch games. Edwards, despite missing the eligibility for MVP and All-NBA due to games played, showcased a stellar 56.5% shooting in clutch situations. Murray finished second in clutch points with 166 and registered the most assists in those moments.

This award, named in tribute to "Mr. Clutch" Jerry West, marks Gilgeous-Alexander as the fourth recipient, joining a prestigious list that includes De'Aaron Fox, Stephen Curry, and Jalen Brunson.
