Tony Bennett joins the Los Angeles Lakers as NBA draft adviser, announced Wednesday. The former Virginia coach, a two-time national coach of the year, brings a wealth of experience to Rob Pelinka’s front office. Bennett coached Virginia from 2009-2024, leading the Cavaliers to a 2019 national championship and posting a 364-136 record. Pelinka praises Bennett’s ability to build a culture of high-character, high-skill players. Bennett is honored as Virginia's career wins leader and recently had the court at John Paul Jones Arena named after him. He previously coached at Washington State from 2006-2009 and was the AP national coach of the year in 2007 and 2018. Bennett expresses excitement about contributing to the storied Lakers franchise. He played under his father at Wisconsin-Green Bay and spent four years in the NBA, including three with Charlotte.
