Penei Sewell, a three-time All-Pro and four-time Pro Bowler, is set to change positions for the Detroit Lions this season, a move that could redefine their offensive line. This transition highlights Sewell's unique versatility as he steps in to replace Taylor Decker at left tackle, a position historically dominated by legends like Anthony Munoz, Tony Boselli, and Joe Thomas.
Lions head coach Dan Campbell believes Sewell's shift will be smooth. “It’ll be like riding a bike for him,” he said, emphasizing Sewell's past experience at left tackle in college and during his rookie year. Drafted seventh overall in 2021, Sewell made history as the youngest left tackle to start in the NFL at just 20 years old.
With the Lions selecting first-round pick Blake Miller from Clemson to fill the right tackle spot, Sewell’s transition is crucial for maintaining the team's momentum. Over five seasons, Sewell has started 83 regular-season games and contributed to the Lions' resurgence in the league. Campbell also noted Sewell's athleticism, suggesting he could potentially play guard or tight end, but acknowledged the challenges of switching sides. Sewell himself has described the adjustment as learning to push off a different leg, adding a layer of complexity to his new role.
