Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver DK Metcalf avoids criminal charges following an altercation with a Detroit Lions fan during a game last December. This decision by the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office sheds light on the incident that caught national attention.
Metcalf’s interaction with Ryan Kennedy occurred in the second quarter of the Steelers' 29-24 win on December 21. CBS cameras recorded the exchange, where Kennedy, dressed in Lions colors and a blue wig, leaned over the railing. As the incident unfolded, Metcalf reached toward Kennedy's head, but it seemed there was little to no contact. The NFL responded by suspending Metcalf for the last two games of the regular season, though he returned for the Steelers' playoff matchup against the Houston Texans.
After a thorough investigation, which included reviewing video footage and interviewing witnesses, authorities determined there was no basis for charges. They noted that Kennedy did not appear injured and did not seek medical assistance at the game. Metcalf’s attorney, Mitch Schuster, hailed the decision as a “just result.” However, a defamation lawsuit filed by Kennedy against Metcalf remains unresolved.
