The NHL All-Star Weekend in 2027 is set to feature an unprecedented international lineup with teams from Canada, Finland, Sweden, the United States, and a "World" team. This decision reflects the growing global influence of hockey following the 4 Nations Face-Off and the Winter Olympics.
What follows puts the whole situation in context, as Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly confirms that Russian players will be eligible for the "World" team, despite uncertainties surrounding their participation in other international events.
Scheduled for February 5-6 at UBS Arena in Elmont, New York, this midseason classic will adopt a 3-on-3, round-robin tournament format, featuring nine skaters and two goalies per team. Each team plays four 5-minute games, with a chance to claim a $2 million prize for the winners.
The All-Star Skills Competition will also see changes, highlighting younger talent with ten players aged 25 and under competing in various events. The top contenders will vie for a $1 million prize in an obstacle course finale.
While the inclusion of Russian players marks a significant shift, their future in events like the World Cup remains uncertain, as they have faced bans from International Ice Hockey Federation competitions since 2022.
