Cleveland Heights honors Olympic gold medalist Laila Edwards with a banner at the Community Center ice rink. Edwards, a trailblazer as the first Black woman on the U.S. women's national team, boasts two NCAA national championships and an IIHF World Championship title. Christopher Kendel, assistant commissioner of parks and recreation, confirms plans for the banner and replicas of her Team USA and Wisconsin jerseys. Edwards, a local talent, played against boys at the very rink where she’ll be honored. At 13, she moved to Bishop Kearney High School in New York, then shone at Wisconsin, leading the Badgers to two national titles. Her pivotal role in the U.S. gold medal victory against Canada at the 2026 Milan Cortina Olympics has increased recognition. The Kelce brothers, Jason and Travis, recently celebrated her achievements on their podcast, affirming her status as the top athlete from Cleveland Heights.
