Manon Rheaume steps into a pivotal role as the general manager of the PWHL's new expansion team in Detroit, marking a historic move in women's hockey. This decision not only honors her trailblazing career but also sets the stage for a new era in the league.
Rheaume, a Canadian Olympic goaltender and the first woman to play in a major men's sports exhibition game, joins the PWHL after four years with the Los Angeles Kings' hockey operations. Her appointment is a homecoming, as she previously spent 11 years with the Little Caesars youth hockey program in Detroit.
"I'm incredibly honored to join the PWHL and help build something special in Detroit," Rheaume stated, acknowledging the city’s rich hockey heritage. Rheaume's hiring follows the league's announcement of Detroit as an expansion team, which will see the PWHL grow to 12 teams next season, including franchises in Las Vegas and Hamilton, Ontario.
Jayna Hefford, the PWHL executive vice president of hockey operations, praised Rheaume's extensive experience and leadership. Rheaume's immediate tasks include preparing for the expansion free agent signing on May 28 and the league draft on June 17, as she aims to shape a competitive team for its inaugural season.
