Radko Gudas of the Anaheim Ducks receives a five-game suspension from the NHL for a dangerous knee-on-knee hit that sidelined Toronto Maple Leafs star Auston Matthews for the season. Matthews suffers a Grade 3 MCL tear and quad contusion during a 6-4 victory against Anaheim. He will be reevaluated in two weeks. The NHL's Department of Player Safety conducted a phone hearing with Gudas, capping his suspension at five games. Judd Moldaver, Matthews' agent, expresses shock at the ruling, calling it "laughable" and "preposterous." Maple Leafs coach Craig Berube labels the hit "a dirty play," while Ducks coach Joel Quenneville claims it was unintentional. Gudas defends himself, arguing he aimed for a legal check. The NHL determined Gudas initiated the knee contact, leading to the collision. This marks Gudas' fifth suspension in his 14-year career, totaling 21 games.
