Kris Sparre takes the helm as the first coach of Hamilton's new PWHL franchise, marking a significant step for the expansion team. This decision is crucial, as Sparre's leadership could set the tone for Hamilton's inaugural season.
Sparre transitions from the Boston Fleet, where he led the team to a remarkable 62-point season, an impressive 18-point increase from the previous year, before falling to Ottawa in the semifinals. His performance earned him a finalist spot for the 2026 PWHL Coach of the Year award. This hire is the first major move by Hamilton’s general manager, Meghan Duggan, who emphasizes the importance of establishing a strong team culture.
Expressing his enthusiasm, Sparre noted the personal significance of this move, being closer to family while building a new foundation in Hamilton. With a robust coaching background in the Ontario Hockey League, Austria's top league, and the American Hockey League, Sparre brings a wealth of experience to his new role.
Duggan praises Sparre’s blend of hockey knowledge and leadership skills, believing he will create an environment players want to join. Hamilton joins Detroit, Las Vegas, and San Jose as one of four new teams competing in the 12-team PWHL next season.
