The Finalissima between Spain and Argentina, set for March 27 in Qatar, is officially cancelled. Ongoing political tensions in the region prompted the decision. Spain was open to UEFA’s alternative arrangements, including a match at the Santiago Bernabeu with a 50:50 fan split. However, Argentina, led by manager Lionel Scaloni and star Lionel Messi, rejected both proposals.
The first option involved a two-legged format, which Argentina opposed due to past trauma from a 6-1 loss to Spain before the 2014 World Cup. They aimed to avoid disruption ahead of the 2026 World Cup. Additionally, the Argentina FA insisted on receiving the full fee as if the game were still in Qatar, disregarding the loss of ticket sales and sponsorship. Spain, willing to compromise, prepared to earn less from the match.
