Racing officially kicks off at the 2026 Etchells World Championship in San Diego after a morning delay, showcasing 76 boats from 11 countries. Here’s why the opening day results could set the tone for the entire championship.

The sun eventually breaks through the iconic "May Gray," delivering a steady 8-10 knot breeze on the Coronado Roads Race Course. Two 90-minute races unfold, testing the skills of competitors in moderate conditions. With innovative Vakaros race technology in play, the Race Committee ensures fair starts and efficient racing.

In the first race, USA 1527 RayGun, skippered by Austin Sperry, dominates the course, leading from start to finish. Reigning World Champion James Mayo, sailing AUS 1526, struggles initially but recovers to take the win in the second race. The leaderboard at the close of Day 1 sees Scott Kaufman aboard Rogue (USA 1519) in the top spot with 10 points, thanks to consistent performances.

Local sailor Chris Busch (USA 969) continues to impress, finishing strong in both races. Among the Corinthian teams, Free Bird (USA 1060), led by Sarah Wilkinson, also shows promise. The competition is fierce, and the stakes are high as the championship unfolds.
