RicO'Shea Dominates at the 2026 Squib Championships
Initially, Thursday's racing was called off, leaving participants disappointed. However, Friday brought a refreshing change. With a pleasant breeze and no AP flag in sight, the stage was set for an exciting conclusion to the 2026 Squib Championships.
Furthermore, two races were scheduled, allowing competitors to showcase their skills. With only one discard in play, every point counted as the series approached its climax.
First Race Thrills and Challenges
Notably, the first race faced challenges right from the start. Crews struggled with a spirited eagerness that led to multiple false starts. Additionally, a significant wind shift of about 20 degrees necessitated a course reset, keeping the race committee busy. Once underway, Veronica and Ben Fallat’s Squffy initially took the lead.
However, RicO'Shea quickly demonstrated his prowess. He surged forward during the run, ultimately claiming victory and securing an unassailable lead in the championship standings. Croc, helmed by Chris and Gillian Jordan, finished second, while Alchemy, with Gerard Dyson and Brian Holland, held onto third place.
Exciting Finish and Championship Celebrations
Meanwhile, the second race brought even better conditions, with the wind building and several boats opting to return early. For those who stayed, the race proved exhilarating. Nick Bacon and Richard Tucker, sailing Rojo, challenged RicO'Shea fiercely throughout the race.
As they approached the final mark, they found themselves neck and neck. Unfortunately, RicO'Shea made an uncharacteristic mistake, gybing too early. This slip allowed Rojo to seize the lead, finishing ahead of RicO'Shea. Budgies Tongue claimed third place, while Mayhem and Discord battled closely behind.
As competitors returned to Pwllheli, anticipation built regarding the final standings. With only two points separating the top teams, the results would reveal who secured podium positions.
In summary, RicO'Shea emerged victorious as the 2026 National Champion. The championship dinner at the Cove celebrated the outstanding achievements of all competitors. Looking ahead, attention now shifts to next year’s event. The 2026 Squib National Championships will take place in Belfast from June 19 to 25, 2027, promising another fantastic gathering for sailing enthusiasts.
