Leinster, once dominant, is going through a worrying period of turbulence. In the Champions Cup, the Irish province is struggling to shine, with four finals lost since 2019 and an early exit in the semi-finals last season against Northampton Saints (34-37).
Why stay with us? We'll explain the reasons that could account for this decline.
After winning the United Rugby Championship in 2025, Leinster is only sitting in 4th place this season, with six losses, including a disappointing one against Treviso (29-26). The aging roster is playing a crucial role: players like Josh van der Flier and James Lowe, both 33 years old, and James Gibson-Park at 34, are starting to show signs of fatigue. Additionally, All Black Rieko Ioane, expected to be a key asset, has only scored three tries in 13 matches.
The collective play is suffering as well, with the 5th attack in the Champions Cup, scoring only 29 tries in six matches. Meanwhile, Léo Cullen, in his role for ten years, is struggling to refresh his team and find solutions. The clash against Toulon this Saturday at Aviva Stadium is set to be decisive for the future of Leinster.
