Dave Rennie welcomes back Gilbert Enoka, a key figure from the All Blacks' golden era, as he finalizes his management team for the 2026 international season. Here’s why this decision could reshape New Zealand's path towards the next Rugby World Cup.
Gilbert Enoka, renowned for his role as Leadership and Mental Performance Coach, returns after a brief hiatus post-2023 World Cup. His influence was pivotal during the All Blacks' back-to-back World Cup triumphs in 2011 and 2015, earning him recognition as the 'secret ingredient' by former head coach Sir Steve Hansen. Enoka brings invaluable experience, having worked with the England cricket team and Chelsea FC recently.
Rennie also reassigns Dr. James McGarvey as Team Doctor, a position he held from 2020 to 2023. Their established rapport, dating back to the New Zealand Under 20s in 2010, is expected to facilitate a seamless transition as they prepare for an intense season, including an extended tour of South Africa.
Interim CEO Steve Lancaster acknowledges the contributions of departing members Dr. Ceri Evans and Dr. Martin Swan, emphasizing their impact on the team's mental performance strategies. As the All Blacks gear up for the future, these strategic appointments signal a focus on both experience and continuity.
