Asenathi Ntlabakanye stands on the brink of a pivotal decision regarding his rugby future, as the Springboks prop awaits the outcome of his doping hearing. This verdict could significantly impact his career, with potential bans ranging from two to four years on the table.
The hearing wrapped up last week, with both prosecution and defense presenting their final arguments. Ntlabakanye tested positive for anastrozole, a banned substance, but also admitted to using the performance-enhancing Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA). Originally scheduled for December 2025, the case faced delays due to expert witness availability. A decision is expected within three weeks.
Despite the cloud of controversy, Ntlabakanye has continued to play, featuring for both the Lions and Springboks. His only Test appearance this season was during the Quilter Nations Series, where he contributed to a 73-0 thrashing of Wales. Springboks head coach Rassie Erasmus expressed hope for Ntlabakanye’s exoneration, emphasizing the emotional toll of the situation. He stated, “I don’t think he intentionally did anything wrong,” underscoring the support Ntlabakanye has from the team.
The coming weeks will be crucial as the rugby community awaits the panel's decision on Ntlabakanye's fate.
