Cheslin Kolbe is set for a sensational return to the Stormers after leaving Japan's Suntory Sungoliath. This pivotal move could reshape the Stormers' backline and impact their future ambitions.
According to Afrikaans publication Rapport, Kolbe will officially rejoin the Cape Town side starting July 1. The deal is facilitated by collaboration between the Stormers, Roc Nation Sports, and an international sports betting company, believed to be Sportybet. Additionally, support from SA Rugby's PONI funding structure plays a crucial role in making this return possible, especially after Kolbe extended his contract with Suntory earlier this year until the end of the 2026/27 season.
Stormers director of rugby John Dobson sees Kolbe as an integral part of Project 2029, which aims to secure the team's future. Kolbe joins a growing list of high-profile returns, including Springboks captain Siya Kolisi and tighthead prop Wilco Louw, both set to bolster the squad ahead of the 2026/27 season.
Kolbe continues to showcase his elite performance, scoring 20 points in Suntory's recent Japan Rugby League One quarter-final victory. His re-signing adds depth to the Stormers' wing options, where Leolin Zas and Suleiman Hartzenberg have been key players this season.
