Brendan Delaney, former Highlanders and Scotland star, claims the All Blacks jersey has lost its prestigious allure, urging New Zealand Rugby (NZR) to reconsider its eligibility rules.
This shift in perspective highlights a brewing issue that could reshape the future of rugby in New Zealand.
Current NZR regulations bar New Zealanders playing abroad from representing the All Blacks unless granted a sabbatical. Despite Scott Robertson’s earlier calls for flexibility, NZR remains steadfast on its policy, refusing to alter selections for overseas players. Even after stepping down as head coach, Robertson shifted his stance, supporting the existing rules. His successor, Dave Rennie, however, is eager to bring back Brodie Retallick from Japan, which poses a challenge under the current criteria.
Recent departures underscore this trend. Promising players like Devan Flanders of the Hurricanes and All Blacks loose forwards Hoskins Sotutu and Dalton Papali’i are set to join overseas clubs, while winger Fehi Fineanganofo, leading Super Rugby Pacific in tries, has signed with Newcastle.
Delaney emphasizes the urgency for NZR to adapt, stating, “The pull of the All Black jersey isn't what it was 20 years ago,” warning that without change, more talent will look overseas for opportunities.
