Former Wallabies winger Digby Ioane faces serious legal troubles after being denied bail for allegedly threatening to kill a man over a land deal in Samoa. This situation could have major implications for his future and the sport.

Ioane, who is 40 years old and representing himself, appeared in Brisbane Magistrates Court, revealing his concerns about a “massive deal” involving his mother’s significant land. He claimed the man in question had made an agreement with the Samoan Prime Minister regarding a $100 million deal. His brother, Salā, testified that Ioane was struggling with mental health issues, likely linked to past head injuries from his rugby career, and stated that his brother's threats stemmed from anger rather than intent to harm.

However, Magistrate Anne Thacker highlighted the severity of the accusations, emphasizing Ioane's repeated threats and the risk he poses if released. She ordered Ioane to remain in custody until further evaluations can be conducted, urging him to seek medication. The case is adjourned until June 8. Ioane has a notable rugby history, playing 35 Tests for the Wallabies and being a star for the Reds during their 2011 Super Rugby championship run.
