Fabien Galthié shakes up the France rugby coaching staff, reportedly pushing out Shaun Edwards in a significant move ahead of the July Nations Championship. This decision could reshape France’s defensive strategy as they prepare for key matches against England A, New Zealand, Australia, and Japan.
Reports from L’Equipe highlight that Edwards, once a celebrated figure, faces growing discontent within the team and is absent from recent coaching meetings. Despite being contracted until 2028, his future has become a contentious issue. Galthié aims to replace him with a fresh voice, having already enlisted Gérald Bastide, who previously served as defence coach from 2015 to 2017.
In a surprising twist, kicking coach Vlok Cilliers is also set to depart, with Toulon’s Maxime Petitjean stepping in for the Nations Championship. The reasons behind Cilliers’ exit remain unclear, especially given France's successful tactical kicking during the Six Nations.
Looking ahead, Geoffrey Doumayrou emerges as Galthié’s top choice for the long-term defence role. Currently contracted with Montpellier, Doumayrou could potentially be loaned to the national team, a move that might align with France’s ambitions for the 2027 Rugby World Cup.
