Hurricanes boss Clark Laidlaw declares it’s “too soon” to discuss a potential move for All Blacks star Ardie Savea after the shocking announcement of Moana Pasifika's removal from Super Rugby Pacific. This decision forces Savea, the franchise’s captain, to seek a new club despite being under contract until 2027.
Currently on sabbatical with Dave Rennie’s Kobelco Kobe Steelers in Japan, Savea’s future is uncertain as he weighs his options for the next season. The Hurricanes seem a natural fit, given his decade-long history in Wellington, but Laidlaw emphasizes the sensitivity of the situation. “We’re preparing for the Chiefs,” he states. “It feels a wee bit insensitive to think about their players right now.”
With Savea being one of the world’s elite players, interest from other New Zealand franchises is inevitable, particularly as the Rugby World Cup approaches. Although he could explore options abroad, breaking his contract with New Zealand Rugby would complicate things.
Laidlaw reflects on the harsh realities of professional sport, having experienced similar situations in the UK. He underscores the emotional toll on everyone involved, as financial instability continues to challenge rugby teams worldwide.
