Will Jordan's fitness is in serious doubt as he faces an extended recovery from a calf injury, leaving the All Blacks scrambling for a replacement ahead of their Nations Championship opener against France. Here’s why this injury could reshape the All Blacks' strategy.
Jordan, a dynamic force with 54 Test caps since his 2020 debut, has played a crucial role in the All Blacks’ recent successes, including the 2023 World Cup. However, he has been plagued by injuries this Super Rugby season, managing only seven appearances for the Crusaders. After sustaining a calf injury against the Chiefs, the anticipated recovery timeline of four to six weeks rules him out for the remainder of Super Rugby Pacific.
Incoming head coach Dave Rennie now must consider his options. Damian McKenzie emerges as the front-runner to step into the full-back role. Known for his speed and playmaking ability, McKenzie’s experience at fly-half could enhance the All Blacks' backfield dynamics.
Other contenders include Beauden Barrett and Ruben Love, both of whom have proven themselves capable at full-back. Barrett's experience and Love’s recent performances add depth to the selection process. With the opener against France fast approaching, the pressure is on Rennie to find the right fit to maintain the team’s competitive edge.
