Benhard Janse van Rensburg’s recent call-up to England's squad sparks fresh debate on his international loyalties. Here’s why his candid reflections could reshape perceptions around his selection and the future of England’s rugby ambitions.

In a resurfaced interview from nearly two years ago, Janse van Rensburg, now with Bristol Bears, discussed his aspirations on the Maul or Nothing podcast. He faced a pivotal question: would he prefer five Springboks caps or 50 for England? His response was revealing, stating he would welcome a Springboks call-up but wouldn't turn down England if they came first.

However, he expressed concern about how his “proper Afrikaans” children would view his choice to represent England over South Africa. “If I tell them I played for England, they’re going to look at me, ‘why did you do that and not play for South Africa?’” he explained. Despite the personal conflict, he acknowledged England offers an opportunity he couldn't refuse, especially with the competition for places in South Africa.

As Steve Borthwick's decision to include him in the training squad faces mixed reactions, Janse van Rensburg's thoughts highlight the complex emotions behind national representation in rugby today.
