Sir John Kirwan believes Richie Mo’unga will definitely play for the All Blacks in South Africa, despite NZ Rugby’s strict regulations. This prediction raises questions about the implications for the team’s lineup and strategy moving forward.
Mo’unga is currently with Toshiba Brave Lupus in Japan and will not be eligible for the All Blacks until later in the year due to NZR's rules. His contract requires him to first play for Canterbury in the NPC before he can be selected. However, Kirwan suggests that an injury could provide a pathway for his inclusion. During a recent podcast, he stated, “He’s going to play for his club and he will be in Africa, don’t even think about it.”
Kirwan's comments echo a similar situation from the 2023 Rugby World Cup, where Rassie Erasmus called up Handre Pollard following Malcolm Marx's injury. The competition for the fly-half position remains fierce, with established players like Beauden Barrett and Damian McKenzie, as well as rising star Ruben Love, who has been outstanding for the Hurricanes. Kirwan emphasizes the need for versatile players on this crucial tour, reiterating his belief that Mo’unga will be part of the squad.
