Tate McDermott faces a race against time to recover from a hamstring injury ahead of the Wallabies’ opener against Ireland on July 4. This setback comes after he underwent surgery to reattach his hamstring, an injury sustained during the Rugby Championship loss to the All Blacks last September, marking his 50th Test cap.

McDermott hoped to return for the Reds in the Super Rugby Pacific campaign, but his rehab has proven challenging. Currently, the Queensland team sits sixth in the standings, with five wins from nine matches. Last weekend, they lost to the Blues in a nail-biting golden point finish, further complicating McDermott's timeline for a return to play.

Speaking at a joint promotion with the Dolphins NRL side, McDermott candidly discussed his recovery process. He acknowledges the hurdles he's faced, stating, “It’s been a bit of a long journey.” Despite feeling positive about his progress, he admits uncertainty about when he can return to club action.

After six months of intense rehabilitation, he is optimistic about getting back on the field before the regular season concludes. The Wallabies' first match in the new Nations Championship is now less than 10 weeks away, putting added pressure on McDermott to finalize his comeback.
