Mike Catt, the Rugby World Cup winner and England legend, exits the Waratahs as attack coach by mutual consent after two years.
This unexpected departure raises questions about the future direction of the Super Rugby Pacific side.
Catt, who joined the Waratahs prior to the 2025 season, played a key role in reshaping the team's attack alongside head coach Dan McKellar and assistant coaches Lachlan McCaffrey and Dan Palmer. Despite his extensive international experience, the Waratahs struggled this season, finishing eighth with only five wins from 15 matches. They were eight points shy of the final playoff spot, which was claimed by the Brumbies.
B-J Mather, the Director of High Performance, acknowledged Catt's significant contributions and expressed gratitude for his professionalism. He stated, “Mike has made a significant contribution to the Waratahs since joining... He has not only brought extensive international experience but also a strong commitment to helping both players and coaches improve.”
With Catt's immediate departure confirmed, the Waratahs are now in the process of finding a successor. The disappointing season culminated in a complete exit from the playoffs, as both Australian representatives, the Reds and Brumbies, fell to New Zealand teams in the knockout stages. This weekend, the semi-finals feature an all-New Zealand lineup.
