Moana Pasifika faces imminent extinction from Super Rugby Pacific after World Rugby withdraws funding, leaving the club in dire straits. This shocking decision could reshape the landscape of Pacific rugby and highlights the precarious financial situation of emerging teams.

Reports indicate that Moana Pasifika, which joined Super Rugby in 2022, has struggled to maintain financial stability. Their owner has informed players and staff that funding will cease after the current season. Chief executive Debbie Sorensen confirmed that while financial obligations for the 2026 season will be honored, the club's future hinges on securing new ownership willing to cover annual costs of $10 million to $12 million.

Despite efforts to find a buyer, including a sales document circulated last year, no potential owner has stepped forward. New Zealand Rugby’s approval is critical for any new ownership, adding another layer of difficulty. The club has already exhausted government funding and lost support from World Rugby, while sponsorship deals, such as Sky's front-of-jersey rights worth approximately $300,000 annually, are not expected to continue beyond 2026.

Moana Pasifika’s final match could come against the Brumbies on May 30, marking a potential end to their brief Super Rugby tenure.
