Munster Rugby faces backlash after appointing former All Black Roger Randle as attack coach, a decision that has stirred unease among fans. This appointment, set for next season, comes as a replacement for departing senior coach Mike Prendergast, who moves to Bath.
The controversy stems from a 1997 rape allegation against Randle, made during his playing days with the Hurricanes. While the case was dropped when the accuser withdrew the charge, she maintained her allegation. The resurfacing of this incident on social media has led to significant criticism of Munster’s choice.
Three members of Munster’s Professional Game Board, including ex-players Billy Holland and Mick O’Driscoll, resigned in protest of the decision, citing dissatisfaction with the hiring process. Munster addressed the controversy, stating they conducted due diligence and are confident in Randle's appointment.
Randle has been with the Chiefs since 2019 and is expected to collaborate closely with Munster’s skills coach Mossy Lawler. Current Munster boss Clayton McMillan, who previously worked with Randle, supports the hiring. With tensions running high, this situation raises questions about the impact on team dynamics and fan support as the season progresses.
