Dave Rennie confirms that Richie Mo'unga will miss the All Blacks' upcoming matches against South Africa due to New Zealand Rugby's strict selection policy. This decision could have significant implications for New Zealand’s strategy heading into critical Tests.
Rennie, who recently took over as head coach, acknowledges that Mo'unga must first play for Canterbury in the National Provincial Championship (NPC) before being eligible for international duty. He had originally planned to integrate Mo'unga into the squad for the Test series, but the governing body’s rules forced him to abandon that idea.
"Richie hasn’t committed for a couple of years, so he’s not available for Africa," Rennie states. He emphasizes the depth of talent available within New Zealand's fly-half pool, mentioning Beauden Barrett and Damian McKenzie as key options. While Rennie remains optimistic about Mo'unga’s future involvement, he must now rely on players who are currently competing.
With the All Blacks facing a crucial period in their schedule, this decision shifts the focus to the local talent ready to step up. Rennie is committed to making the best of the situation, indicating that the team will adapt and move forward without Mo'unga for now.
