Bob Skinstad warns that England rugby's future is at risk due to the Gallagher PREM's controversial decision to eliminate relegation. This shift undermines competitive spirit, leaving players ill-prepared for international challenges.

Skinstad, a former Springboks captain, emphasizes that without jeopardy, players lack the drive to excel. “If you’re happy to play in the bland marshmallow land…why would you suddenly be a sharpened tool in a Test match environment?” he states. Since 2020, the absence of relegation has coincided with England's decline, where they have lost 16 of 30 matches and suffered record defeats to Ireland and France.

The Rugby Football Union is currently reviewing the situation after England's worst-ever Six Nations campaign. Skinstad highlights the extraordinary nature of a system where players can lose every game yet remain in the top tier.

In February, the RFU confirmed a major shift to a franchise model, prioritizing financial stability over sporting uncertainty, with clubs collectively losing £34 million in the 2023/24 season. The total debt across the league has reached £342.5 million, with many clubs facing insolvency. Skinstad believes this decision could haunt English rugby, leaving coach Steve Borthwick with inadequate tools to succeed.
