Jean-Luc du Preez's rugby future hangs in the balance as Bordeaux-Begles president Laurent Marti suggests he should consider retirement due to ongoing concussion issues.
This development raises critical questions about player safety and the long-term impact of head injuries in rugby.
Du Preez, who joined Bordeaux at the start of the season from Sale Sharks, has only made three appearances this term. He initially missed the start of the season due to a knee injury sustained on international duty. After returning for a Top 14 victory against Racing 92 and playing in two Champions Cup matches, he has been sidelined once again with a head injury.
Marti expresses serious concerns about Du Preez's condition, stating, “If it were my son, I would ask him to stop because I’m very scared.” He acknowledges the significant loss Du Preez would represent for the team.
The 30-year-old made his Test debut in 2016 but has often found himself on the fringes of the Springboks squad. His last international appearance came against Argentina in August 2023, and he missed the Rugby World Cup due to injury. With his career now in jeopardy, the situation underscores the pressing need for a better understanding of player health in rugby.
