Sir Steve Hansen lauds the new NZ Rugby board for its exemplary process in appointing Dave Rennie as the All Blacks' head coach. This meticulous approach comes on the heels of Scott Robertson’s surprising exit, which had been shrouded in controversy due to alleged player unrest, claims denied by the organization.
NZ Rugby Chair David Kirk emphasizes the need for change, stating the All Blacks were "not on track" for the 2027 Rugby World Cup. The board established rigorous criteria, requiring candidates to have international head coaching experience and be New Zealand citizens. This narrowed the field to Rennie and Jamie Joseph, with Rennie ultimately taking the role.
The selection process featured a panel that included All Blacks legends Dane Coles and Keven Mealamu, alongside key NZ Rugby officials. They conducted in-depth evaluations of both candidates, including a week spent observing their coaching environments and extensive interviews.
Amid past criticisms regarding coaching changes, Hansen commends the new board's decisive leadership and transparency. He believes the process to hire Rennie is the best ever witnessed for an All Blacks coach. With Rennie's new coaching team in place, which includes the return of mental skills coach Gilbert Enoka, Hansen calls for national support as the All Blacks aim to harness their considerable talent.
