Owen Farrell must return to the England squad ahead of their Nations Championship clash with South Africa, according to Anthony Watson. Farrell, England’s all-time leading points scorer, has been absent since stepping down as captain and taking a break from Test rugby after the 2023 World Cup to focus on mental well-being. Despite his absence, he played two Tests for the British and Irish Lions in Australia last summer.
This Saturday, Farrell starts at inside centre for Saracens against Bath in the Investec Champions Cup Round of 16. Saracens face a tough challenge after a recent 62-15 defeat to Bath in the league. Watson, who played alongside Farrell for most of his 56 England caps, insists the veteran’s return would be invaluable for a struggling national team.
Watson states, “Should he be part of things in South Africa? 100 percent.” He believes Farrell’s experience and skill would solidify the backline, especially at the 12 position, which remains unsettled.
While speculation surrounds whether Farrell has declined an invitation to return, Watson remains firm: “A squad with Owen Farrell is better than one without him. Your chances of winning silverware improve drastically with him around.”
