Fresh winds are set to create a split fleet on the opening day of the Mubadala New York SailGP. Here’s why this decision could change everything for the rest of the event.

With forecasts predicting gusts reaching the high 20 knots, the 12-boat fleet is likely to divide into two groups of six. This strategy was discussed at the SailGP Pre-Race Preview, where race officials revealed a potential split graphic. The F50s will compete using 18-meter rigs, while SailGP meteorologist Chris Bedford warns of shifting winds and complex tidal flows throughout the May 30-31 competition.

Bedford emphasizes that the main challenge will be the unpredictable wind patterns. A low-pressure system near Cape Cod is expected to push a strong northerly breeze down the Hudson River, funnelling air through Manhattan and onto the racecourse. He states, “Saturday is going to be quite a challenging day, with the breeze quite up and down on the course. That should be interesting.”

New York’s racecourse is notorious for its difficulties, with strong winds swirling among skyscrapers and significant tidal variations. The following day, teams will return to racing as a single fleet, but Saturday’s unpredictable conditions may set the tone for the championship.
