Newcastle Harbour Swim makes waves as it becomes the first ocean swim in Australia to use GPS-controlled MarkSetBot Buoys. Hosted by Stockton Surf Life Saving Club on Australia Day, this innovative technology enhances course accuracy and safety amid challenging harbour conditions.

Stockton Surf Club President Jo-Anne Dryden explains the move stems from last year’s difficulties with traditional buoys shifting due to strong currents and winds. “We faced safety and management issues,” she states. The new buoys, used in elite events like the America's Cup and SailGP, eliminate anchoring challenges.

Dryden initially had reservations but was convinced after seeing the technology in action. The buoys, propeller-driven and controlled via an app, provide precise positioning, setting a new standard for open water swimming. This historic event not only embraces innovation but also prioritizes swimmer safety. Newcastle sets a precedent for future swims across Australia.
