The Australian Women's Keelboat Regatta (AWKR) is a vibrant celebration of sailing, uniting competitors from diverse backgrounds under the banner of camaraderie and skill development.

This year’s 34th edition, hosted by the Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron over the King’s birthday weekend, faces challenges with light winds, but optimism remains high. Race Officer Laura Hughson expresses hope for better conditions as she engages with the competitors.

Jabula’s skipper, Avril Sellars, 77, embodies the spirit of the regatta. With over 40 years of sailing experience, she leads her crew with a calm and strategic approach, despite arthritis affecting her agility. "It’s like coming home to a big family," she says, after securing fourth place in Division 2 of Race 1.

Newcomer Dinah Eagle, sailing on Wendy Tuck’s Beneteau 34.7 Spartan, brings a wealth of experience, having participated in 13 Sydney Hobarts. She relishes the welcoming atmosphere, noting the support from the club and fellow sailors.

As the regatta unfolds, both seasoned and first-time competitors look forward to further races, eager to bond and showcase their skills. Eagle, after this event, heads to Ireland for the challenging Round Ireland Yacht Race, marking an exciting transition in her sailing journey.
