The 2026 International Etchells World Championship wraps up after five thrilling days in San Diego, showcasing a remarkable fleet of 278 competitors across 76 teams from 11 countries. This event highlights why the Etchells Class remains a cornerstone of competitive sailing.
San Diego Yacht Club Commodore Alli Bell expresses pride in hosting the championship, acknowledging nearly 200 volunteers and staff who contributed to the event's success. The overall champion, Magpie AUS 1526, crewed by James Mayo, Paul Cayard, and Ben Lamb, clinched victory amid fierce competition. The Corinthian Class title goes to No Dramas GBR 1490, with Graham Vials praising the exceptional talent in the fleet.
Looking ahead, the UK will host the 2028 World Championships in Cowes, while the next Etchells World Championship is set for Hong Kong in November 2027. Enthusiasm for the upcoming event is palpable, with local competitors like Mark Thornburrow and Jamie McWilliam anticipating a significant turnout.
The championship also saw community spirit shine, raising nearly $3,500 for the SDYC Junior Program through a raffle, supported by sponsors like Palm Beach Motor Yachts and Mount Gay Rum. Excitement builds for the next chapter in Hong Kong!
