Ten competitors hit the waters for Race 3 of the Salcombe Yacht Club Sailing Club Series, battling an anticipated strong breeze that never fully materialized. Here’s why the dynamics of this race may shape future competitions.
Race Officer Tim Fells set a challenging course of three windward-leeward laps in the harbour, avoiding areas restricted by low water. Chris Cleaves, Tim Law, David Greening, and Simon Dobson jostled for position early on, with Dobson rounding the windward mark first. Cleaves seized the lead on the beat back, only to be overtaken by Law and Dobson on the final run to Millbay.
In the Salcombe Yawl Race, nine Yawls faced a brisk north-easterly breeze and a strong ebb tide. Graham CS's 172, helmed by visiting star Andy "Taxi" Davis with new HD sails, initially took the lead but had to retire due to non-club membership. John Burn and Ross Borne in 170 finished second, followed by John and Katy Meadowcroft in 175. The competition saw older boats struggle against newer designs, but Mark Waterhouse and Nicola Bass narrowly outpaced Stephen Galvin and Alan in a thrilling finish.
A day of tight racing brought excitement without the chaos of previous events. Full results are available online.
