Teenage British sailor Toby Smith shatters records with a stunning 31.0 knots in the WASZP class. This achievement marks a significant milestone in youth sailing, reflecting the growing talent in the UK’s junior sailing scene.
Smith's record-breaking speed was not the result of a planned attempt. Instead, it came as he crossed the finish line and spotted a powerful gust of wind. "I thought... this might be the moment," he recalls, showcasing his instinct and determination. With conditions reaching about 35 knots, he took a leap of faith, jibe-turned, and soared to a new record.
Competing at the UK Start of Season Championships in Datchet, Smith's achievement highlights the potential of the Next Gen sailors emerging from the Royal Hospital School Sailing Academy in Suffolk. Looking ahead, he aims for the European Championships in Mar Menor, Spain, this July.
Despite his success, Smith believes there's even more speed to achieve. He reflects on his journey, noting his previous records of 28.4 and 30.4 knots, and expresses confidence that he can reach 34 knots under optimal conditions. With the right setup and favorable weather, the future looks bright for this young talent in the world of foiling.
