Tragedy strikes Team Malizia as they confirm the death of Lukas Wehage, 32, following a swimming accident in Brazil. This heartbreaking incident offers insight into the risks faced during adventure sailing.
On April 22, 2026, Lukas was aboard the Malizia Explorer, anchored in the bay of Praia do Porto after arriving from Rio de Janeiro for a scientific project. Shortly after arrival, he and others went swimming, where he reportedly suffered an underwater fainting spell. Crew members acted promptly, alerting emergency services and providing first aid. Despite swift response and resuscitation efforts, Lukas was pronounced dead after being transported to the hospital.
Lukas, who had been traveling as a backpacker for months, joined Team Malizia in March 2026, bringing enthusiasm and a passion for sailing. The team, including Boris Herrmann, remains in close contact with his family, offering support during this difficult time. They are cooperating with both local and German authorities to investigate the incident.
