Ghana's Thomas Partey is set to miss his nation's opening World Cup match against Panama after being denied entry to Canada. This decision could impact Ghana's campaign as they look to make a strong start in the tournament.
FIFA confirms that Partey, currently training in Boston, faces visa issues due to ongoing legal troubles. The 32-year-old midfielder has pleaded not guilty to seven charges of rape and one count of sexual assault involving allegations from four women between 2020 and 2022. While FIFA states it does not handle immigration processes, Canadian regulations prohibit entry for individuals with unresolved criminal allegations, even without a conviction.
Despite not being convicted, Partey has been barred from traveling to Canada. A Customs and Border Protection spokesperson notes that while he was granted entry into the U.S., the Canadian government made an independent decision regarding his admissibility. Ghana's head coach, Carlos Queiroz, stands by his selection of Partey, emphasizing the importance of allowing legal matters to unfold naturally.
Ghana faces England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27, where Partey could still play if the team progresses. Should they advance, a return to Canada for the knockout stage is possible.
