Elfyn Evans leads the Rally of Japan with a 17.8-second advantage over Sébastien Ogier, leaving the Frenchman with few clear options to make up the lost ground. Here’s why this situation could define the rest of the season for both drivers.
On Saturday afternoon, the rally was shaken by Oliver Solberg's crash in SS10, which left Ogier as Evans' main competitor. In SS11, the Welshman extended his lead by posting an impressive time, while the nine-time champion struggled with tricky light conditions. In SS12, the Toyotas showcased their dominance on dry asphalt, with Evans once again standing out by achieving the fastest time.
The day concluded with two super specials in Fujioka, where Sami Pajari continued to impress, achieving the fastest time in both runs, but unable to catch up to Evans. Now, with six stages ahead on Super Sunday, the pressure is on Ogier, who acknowledges that his teammate is "impossible to catch" given his pace. Oliver Solberg also returns with hopes of scoring valuable points in the championship.
