The organizers of the Rally de Portugal are facing a suspended fine of €15,000 for a serious safety violation. Here’s why this sanction could have a significant impact on the future of the competition.
During the second pass of stage 7 in Arganil, two unauthorized vehicles entered the stage while it was in progress. Elfyn Evans, a Toyota driver, encountered a recovery vehicle, forcing officials to deploy the red flag. A second incident occurred when a car driven by Yohan Rossel from Lancia WRC2 collided with another vehicle that had entered without permission.
The FIA opened an investigation, and the stewards determined that the lack of communication regarding the entry of these vehicles constitutes a serious breach of the International Sporting Code. The race director, Horacio Rodrigues, confirmed that the rally management was not informed about the situation.
The report calls for improved safety measures to prevent future incidents. This not only affects the current organization but also raises doubts about the reliability of safety protocols at WRC events. The decision has been referred to several FIA committees, which could lead to further actions in the future.
