Redwing Youth Nationals Showcase Young Talent
However, Saturday marked an exciting day for young sailors at the inaugural Redwing Youth Nationals. Nineteen Redwing boats took to the water, competing for two prestigious trophies. The event featured races for the Chetwood Cup, aimed at helms under 30, and the Norman Phillips Trophy for those under 19. The event highlighted the impressive skills of these young competitors.
Moreover, the weather conditions played a significant role in the day's success. A stable F2 SSE breeze combined with bright sunshine created perfect sailing conditions. This was especially important as many participants were navigating a Redwing for the first time. Class Captain Billy Clegg and his Committee worked tirelessly to ensure the event ran smoothly, making for an enjoyable experience for both sailors and spectators.
Races and Results: A Day of Close Finishes
Furthermore, the excitement began with the first race, where the course was set around a long line from Footprint to Janson and back. Quail, helmed by Henry Cook, took an early lead, rounding the first mark well ahead of Tara, Toucan, and Ibis. The tactical decisions made by the crews paid off as they navigated the challenging course.
In addition, the race was ultimately shortened to Under Tyne, enabling a swift finish. Quail maintained its lead, finishing 40 seconds ahead of Tara, with Toucan in third place. The competition was fierce lower down the fleet, where close finishes were the norm. For instance, Goose edged out Avocet in a thrilling battle for position.
Champion Sailors and Future Prospects
Notably, the second race continued the competitive spirit. All nineteen boats participated, with cumulative scores determining the Youth National Champion. The course remained the same as the first race, which allowed for consistent racing conditions. Plover, helmed by Will Fletcher, emerged victorious, finishing just ahead of Enigma and Quail.
In summary, Henry and George Cook in Quail claimed the overall victory, winning both the Chetwood Cup and the Norman Phillips Trophy. Alice Clegg and Will Fletcher in Plover secured second place, while Will Toogood in Tara finished third. This event showcased the talent of young sailors and the potential for future competitions.
