Youth Sailors Shine at Cardiff Bay’s Dragon Series

Recently, Cardiff Bay Yacht Club welcomed youth and junior participants for an exciting day of competition. Originally set for June 6, 2026, the event was postponed due to high winds, allowing for a safer and more enjoyable experience on Sunday.
Additionally, despite challenging weather conditions throughout the week, nineteen eager sailors participated in six races. The event catered to a range of skill levels, from novices to seasoned racers. It provided a competitive platform for all, including the Training Handicap Fleet, Silver Handicap Fleets, and Gold Handicap Fleets.
Challenging Conditions Test Young Sailors
Notably, the day began with breezy conditions that gradually shifted to lighter winds in the afternoon. This transition brought unique challenges, testing the sailors' boat handling skills. Sam Thomas, Chief Instructor at Cardiff Bay YC, highlighted the importance of adaptability in such varying conditions.
Furthermore, he expressed his satisfaction with the event's outcome, stating, “It was really pleasing to see the sailors who retired from the breezier morning races get out on the water again.” The resilience of the young sailors was commendable, as many returned to compete in the afternoon races.
Looking Ahead: Future Events in the Dragon Series
In addition, the Dragon Series isn’t slowing down. The next event is scheduled for June 28, 2026, at Tenby Sailing Club in West Wales. This upcoming gathering includes an optional training day on the preceding Saturday, offering participants a chance to refine their skills and enjoy a weekend of sailing.
Moreover, the youth and junior traveller series will continue throughout July and August. It culminates in the Welsh Sailing OnBoard Festival at Bala Sailing Club on August 22-23, 2026. This festival promises to be a highlight of the summer sailing calendar.
