Olympic gold medalist Lin Yu-ting dominates in the Asian boxing championships, advancing to the semifinals. Lin secures a decisive 5-0 victory over top-seeded Ayaka Taguchi of Japan in the quarterfinals, marking her first competition since World Boxing confirmed her gender eligibility. Lin, Taiwan's first Olympic boxing champion, sweeps all five judges’ scorecards with perfect 10s in each round. Earlier in the tournament, she defeated Thananya Somnuek of Thailand with another 5-0 score.
The 30-year-old hasn’t competed internationally since her triumph in the women’s 57-kilogram featherweight division at the Paris Olympics in August 2024. Following the establishment of a new sex eligibility policy by World Boxing, athletes now undergo a one-time genetic test to identify the presence of a Y chromosome. Lin's eligibility was confirmed on March 19, but uncertainty remains regarding future testing for Olympic participation.
The International Olympic Committee recently introduced new rules prohibiting transgender athletes and mandating a one-time gene test in an athlete's career. Lin, alongside Imane Khelif of Algeria, faced scrutiny over their eligibility. Both fighters captured gold in Paris, igniting a politically charged discussion on sports standards. Lin prepares for her next bout in the semifinals on Monday.
