The Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac introduces a groundbreaking Mixed Plus Award for the 2026 race. This new accolade aims to honor teams that champion inclusive crew compositions, with a maximum of 50% male sailors over 18.
This initiative opens doors for women and youth sailors, marking a significant milestone in the race's 117-year history. Eligible teams can opt in after completing race entry, with the first team in each division to finish on corrected time claiming the award.
Race Chairman Kevin Foote highlights the balance between tradition and the need to grow offshore racing, stating that this award encourages broader participation while preserving competitive integrity. Commodore Laura Sigmond underscores the importance of expanding opportunities for women and youth, emphasizing that the Mixed Plus Award fosters team development and inclusivity.
Set for July 10 and 11, 2026, the Race to Mackinac currently boasts 273 entries ready to tackle its iconic 333-mile course from Chicago to Mackinac Island, Michigan. Known for its challenging conditions and stunning views, the race continues to build on its legacy as America’s premier offshore challenge.
