Francesca Clapcich on 11th Hour Racing makes a bold move in the 1000 Race, opting for a direct route with just 410 miles left to the finish. This decision could redefine the dynamics of the race as she gains a slight lead over Violette Dorange on Initiatives-Coeur.
After nearly three days at sea, Clapcich, previously in fifth place, now positions herself 30 nautical miles ahead of Sam Goodchild on MACIF Santé Prévoyance, who has slipped to fifth. By gybing inside the leaders during a favorable wind shift, Clapcich navigates the second waypoint in the Bay of Biscay, leaving the front runners to cover extra distance. Current separation from Goodchild stands at 70 miles.
Clapcich, in her first solo race in an IMOCA, maintains an average speed of 19 knots, sharing her excitement despite the physical challenges. “The waves are really short, and the boat accelerates up to 30 knots. It’s powerful,” she explains. Managing rest and food is crucial as she balances the demands of solo sailing. With 450 miles remaining, Clapcich focuses on the shifting winds while enjoying the competitive spirit alongside Dorange. The race is far from over, and every decision counts.
