Francesca Clapcich climbs to fifth place in the 1000 Race aboard 11th Hour Racing after nearly 48 hours at sea. This shift comes as she navigates challenging conditions, moving ahead of competitors as the fleet approaches the Fastnet Rock.
Clapcich, racing solo for the first time in the IMOCA Class, has surged ahead thanks to favorable winds. She accelerates past Nico D'Estais on Café Joyeux, establishing a six-mile lead over him and doubling that over Arnaud Boissières. With approximately 60 miles left to the race's turning mark, Clapcich averages 16 knots, positioning herself just under a mile behind fourth-placed Elodie Bonafous.
The 11th Hour Racing skipper faces the unique challenges of solo sailing, balancing rest with the need to monitor her boat's performance. Clapcich shares her strategy of staying on the eastern side of the fleet, hoping to catch the northerly breeze sooner. She recounts the difficulties of maneuvering around the Ushant Traffic Separation Zone, navigating strong currents and light winds. Despite these challenges, Clapcich remains focused on maintaining speed and positioning herself for the final stretch of the race.
