The inaugural Classic Yacht Regatta at the Royal Prince Edward Yacht Club attracts 63 classic yachts, showcasing a groundbreaking dual-rating system. This innovative format, featuring both IRC and PHS, makes waves in Australia’s sailing scene.
Stay tuned to discover why this event could redefine classic yacht racing in the country.
Under the leadership of new Commodore Sven Runow, the regatta brings a fresh approach to competition. Runow, an accomplished sailor with numerous Sydney Hobart accolades, emphasizes the significance of IRC, stating it opens doors for more participants. "We could have as many boats as possible competing by giving people choices," he notes.
The response surpasses expectations, with 27 yachts opting for the IRC Standard rating, including International 5.5s and Couta boats—marking a world first. Dedicated measurement days at local clubs ensure participants can easily obtain their certificates, promoting widespread involvement for future events.
Runow envisions a growing tradition, aiming for 100 boats next year. The regatta not only features competitive racing but also a formal Concours d'Elegance, blending sport and elegance. This successful debut signals a bright future for classic yacht racing in Australia, setting the stage for annual celebrations on Sydney Harbour.
